Bimanual Manipulation in a Curve Editing Task

چکیده
In this paper we investigate the relationship between bimanual (two handed) manipulation and the cognitive theories of task integration, divided attention and epistemic action. We explore these relationships by means of an empirical study based on a curve editing task. This task was designed on the principle of integrating the visual, conceptual and input device space domain of each hand's individual task. We provide evidence that this task has superior performance over a unimanual (one-handed) version. Furthermore, the experiment demonstrates that as the task becomes harder (i.e., more cognitively demanding) the bimanual technique exhibits even greater performance benefits over the unimanual technique. We argue that the design principles and performance improvements are generalizable to other task domains.

When it gets more difficult, use both hands: exploring bimanual curve manipulation
In this paper we investigate the relationship between bimanual (two-handed) manipulation and the cognitive aspects of task integration, divided attention and epistemic action. We explore these relationships by means of an empirical study comparing a bimanual technique versus a unimanual (one-handed) technique for a curve matching task. The bimanual technique was designed on the principle of int...

Study participants comprised 10 active women and 10 inactive women with multiple sclerosis who voluntarily participated in this experiment. The participant...
متن کاملThe Differences in Sensorimotor Rhythm Power During Performing In-Phase and Anti-Phase Patterns in Bimanual Coordination
Purpose: The sensorimotor cortex oscillations (frequency ranging between 12 and 15 Hz), commonly known as Sensorimotor Rhythm (SMR) has previously displayed a promising link between the performance of the visuomotor related to skill execution and part of psychology that is adaptive (e.g. the process linked attention which is automatic). This study examined the extent of SMR power in the executi...
متن کاملOptimal Trajectory Planning of a Box Transporter Mobile Robot
This paper aims to discuss the requirements of safe and smooth trajectory planning of transporter mobile robots to perform non-prehensile object manipulation task. In non-prehensile approach, the robot and the object must keep their grasp-less contact during manipulation task. To this end, dynamic grasp concept is employed for a box manipulation task and corresponding conditions are obtained an...
متن کاملSkill-Based Bimanual Manipulation Planning
The paper focuses on specification and utilization of manipulation skills to facilitate programming of bimanual manipulation tasks. Manipulation skills are actions to reach predefined goals. They constitute an interface between lowlevel constraint-based task specification and high level symbolic task planning. The task of the robot can be decomposed into subtasks that can be resolved using mani...
